ELMWOOD PARK, N.J. — Jessica and Adrian Brazier of Elmwood Park thought of running a flower shop once they retired, but instead started early as their career owning Gloria's Florist on Market Street.
The couple bought the store in 1989 as the latest owners in its nearly 60-year history.
"This is not an old man's business," Jessica Brazier said. "It's very physically demanding."
The store specializes in quick turnarounds so that flowers stay fresh and they can be prepared for anything.
"Maybe you forgot somebody's birthday," she said. "Everybody wants [flowers] delivered as early as possible."
Jessica Brazier's favorite flower is an oncidium orchid, while Adrian prefers hybrid lilies.
Jessica Brazier said it was a good choice for them to take over the florist and move to Elmwood Park. They fully adapted to their new home, with their kids' school up the street, and a pizza and grocery store nearby as well.
The relationships make the job great, they said. Jessica Brazier said she loves seeing kids come in with their father to choose Mother's Day flowers. She also gets to know the customers well over the years.
"I don't look at caller ID, but if i hear your voice on the phone I'll know who you are," she said. "That's what makes the hard work [worth it]."
"I could do it every day," Adrian Brazier added.
