SADDLE BROOK, N.J. — Justin Rios calls Saddle Brook home in more ways than one.
Rios, 27, grew up in the township and served as senior instructor of The Edge Ultimate Martial Arts academy. After leaving Saddle Brook 10 years ago -- stopping in-between in Elmwood Park and South Hackensack -- the Edge returned this month.
"It's much more homey," Rios said of the Market Street location. "I see familiar faces all the time which is fantastic."
A Paramus Catholic and William Paterson University graduate, Rios has been training in martial arts since he was 3 and teaching for 10 years. He has black belts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Sil Jun Do defense and Taekwondo.
The Edge features classes in Jiu-Jitsu, boxing, kickboxing and more.
The students like the Saddle Brook location because it's closer to home for many of them. Rios knows the feeling well -- he can walk to work now.
His goal now is to instill the same sense of in the academy.
"We really want families to come in and learn how to defend themselves," Rios said. "We try not to specialize in one art. We want people to be as well-rounded as possible."
