Residents are invited to spend the day on the Passaic River and enjoy experiences as old as the Lenape Indians and the colonials who settled here.

Here are the day's events:

learn how to kayak -- 1-3 p.m. -- Rick Rodriguez, "the Riverman," will conduct a clinic introducing the joy of kayaking, using safe inflatable vessels. Instruction will include setting up paddles, seats, personal flotation devices and paddling. Bring your own kayak or boat. A few kayaks will be available to rent, for $30.

kayak and boat parade -- 3 p.m. -- Kayaks and boats will paddle downriver to Rick's Island, about 20 minutes, where participants will picnic -- bring your own -- sing, dance, participate in a drum circle and play music. The group will return to the marina by 6 p.m.

relaxing at the marina -- 6 p.m. -- Relax along the river, where there will be displays and activities, including decorating the floating boats that will be used in the Festival of Lights. The boats will be available at $5 each, to decorate and insert messages into. They will contain battery-operated lights.

festival of Lights -- 7 p.m. -- This is a program to celebrate the valuable Passaic River and 100 years as a borough. It will include musical selections, songs sung by Cyre Rodriguez, remarks on the river's significance, and local religious leaders offering ecumenical blessings to the river and prayers for world peace. The floating boats will be cast into the river at sunset.

The day's events will run from 1 p.m. to dark, at the Passaic River Marina. For information on other events, visit the committee's website or by emailing info@epnj100.org.
