Matthews' Diner & Pancake House, 430 S Washington Ave, Bergenfield, (201) 385-9496

Been Around Since: The Matthews family has owned this classic diner on Washington Avenue since 1967.

Known For: Owner Sam Matthews and his manager George agree: buttermilk pancakes are the single most popular item they serve. The diner also has its own private label, old-fashioned style sodas: raspberry, lime, orange, lemonade, pineapple, black cherry, vanilla egg cream, diet root beer. And, the restaurant sells its own line of freshly ground coffee, house blend and decaf, for $8.95 and $9.95 per pound.

Behind the Scenes: Matthews’ is a big place that manages to seem like an attentive, small-town restaurant. Tables are arranged in groups that break up the space, and wait staff is warm and friendly. They are more than willing to give advice on the too-big typical diner menu.

Owner Sam Matthews enjoys “being able to serve people and interact with them, give them good food at a good price.

“It’s a family type place -- like Cheers. Everybody knows your name.” Matthews makes sure he gives customers value with a wide variety of daily lunch specials at a reasonable price: Soup, sandwich, beverage and dessert for under $10.
