Jimmy McLoughlin called out of work after suffering from headaches for three days, Shannon McLoughlin wrote on the GoFundMe page she created for her brother, sister-in-law, nephew and four nieces.
"He went back to bed and then had a seizure," Shannon McLoughlin said. At the hospital, "it was discovered that there was a bleed on the left side of his brain."
Jimmy McLoughlin was unable to recognize or remember dates, places or his family, according to his sister.
During a two-and-a-half week period, he suffered more seizures, underwent two brain surgeries and several other procedures, according to the page.
McLoughlin has a titanium aortic heart valve and is in a "catch-22" situation, his sister said.
"To stop the brain bleed he can't be on his blood thinners," she said. "If he's off the blood thinners for too long, he is at a very high risk for stroke."
Tammy McLoughlin is a secretary in the Elmwood Park School District. Two of the McLoughlin children have graduated, while three still are students.
"Jimmy and Tammy, we have all the hope and faith in the world that you will come out of this ordeal the strong family you have always been," Jim and Amanda Campbell wrote.
