When someone is severely injured, you may think getting help would be his or her first thought. But, as Daily Voice reported Oct. 13, a Hackensack man lost his arm in an accident with a commuter train – and then walked home instead of waiting for help to come to him.

And that wasn’t even the strangest part of the story.

Responders, alerted to a suspected suicide attempt, found the arm around 10:15 p.m. near the Anderson Street commuter station. They expected to find a body somewhere nearby.

But the man walked four blocks home to Second Street, where he finally called himself an ambulance. Police were searching the tracks for him when the call came in, and when officers responded to his house he answered the door.

He was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, along with the arm. A responder at the scene told Daily Voice it appeared he would live, but it wasn’t likely the arm could be reattached.
