ELMWOOD PARK, N.J. — One moment, 9-year-old Arianna Muti was playing soccer. The next she had a headache so severe it sent her to the hospital.
Doctors diagnosed the former Saddle Brook youngster with an arteriovenous malformation, which caused bleeding in her brain.
She underwent emergency brain surgery after her condition was revealed Oct. 10, followed by a hemicraniectomy procedure. Surgeons removed part of her skull to allow her brain to swell.
Hearing of Arianna's condition, Elmwood Park resident Michele Spagnuolo stepped up.
A friend of the Manahawkin family, Spagnuolo set up a GoFundMe page to help them with their medical expenses.
As of Oct. 15, it had raised more than $27,000.
"This is a young family with two hard-working parents and three children," Spagnuolo said. "They are a beautiful family that would lend a helping hand to others in need.
"The last thing a parent needs to worry about in a time like this is providing for their family and the astronomical medical bills to come."
