SADDLE BROOK, N.J. -- John Chanda, 76, of Saddle Brook died Tuesday, July 5, 2016.
Born in New York City and raised in Garfield, he resided in Saddle Brook for 51 years.
He proudly served with the National Guard. Chanda was a faithful parishioner of St. Michael the Archangel Byzantine Catholic Cathedral in Passaic. An avid history buff, he also enjoyed watching the New York Giants and New York Yankees, trips to Atlantic City and participating in the Four Seasons Rod and Gun Club of New York.
The definition of a wonderful man who treasured his family deeply, he touched the lives of many with his example of always doing the right thing and will be forever loved.
Prior to retiring, he was a loyal postman with the U.S. Postal Service, where he served the City of Garfield for 35 years. Subsequently, he served as a crossing guard with the Township of Saddle Brook for nine years.
He was the husband of 54 years to Mary (Accardi), his high school sweetheart; father of three daughters, Terri Schram (George), Mariann Gelenius (Robert) and Joanie Montalbano (Mark); grandfather of Thomas and Stephen Schram, Kaylee and Jonathan Gelenius and Carly and Ava Montalbano; brother of Jerry Chanda (Margaret); brother-in-law of Anita Bordino; son of the late John and Mary Chanda; and uncle, cousin and friend to many.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 1-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday with a 2 p.m. parastas at Vander Plaat-Caggiano Funeral Home, 13-31 Saddle River Road, Fair Lawn. A Divine Liturgy of Christian Burial is planned for 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Michael the Archangel Byzantine Catholic Cathedral, 96 1st St., Passaic. Interment will follow at St. Michael’s Cemetery in South Hackensack.
