Silvestro Pinelli Jr., 79, Saddle Brook Resident, Retired Policeman

SADDLE BROOK, N. J. -- Silvestro Pinelli Jr., known as “Junie,” a longtime Saddle Brook resident and retired Port Authority police officer, died Dec. 29. He was 79.

Pinelli was born in Jersey City to the late Pauline and Silvestro Pinelli and raised in North Bergen. He lived in Saddle Brook for 51 years and was a parishioner at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served from 1956-59 as a paratrooper for the 101st Airborne Division. One of his hobbies was collecting war memorabilia.

After his service, his career was as a police officer with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. He retired in 1989 after 30 years. 

He's survived by his wife Patricia (Smarth) Pinelli; and his children Michael Pinelli; Lisa Soler, Silvestro Pinelli III and wife Nancy and Janine Santacroce. 

Survivors also include grandchildren Jessica, Nate, Danielle, Max, Jenna, Briana and Samantha; and sisters Mary Schalhoub and Lyda Pinelli. 

A visitation is planned from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Friday at Vander Plaat-Caggiano Funeral Home, 13-31 Saddle River Road, Fair Lawn. A Mass is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Philip the Apostle Church, 488 Saddle River Road, Saddle Brook.
