The second-highest number of drop boxes in New Jersey is in Ocean County -- 19.
Passaic County has a dozen locations, including three provided by County Sheriff Richard H. Berdnik -- two in Paterson, one in Wayne.
Project Medicine Drop helps improve public safety and a town's quality of life by encouraging residents to be be fully aware of "the potential for abuse" presented by "unused, excess or expired" prescription drugs, Bergenfield Police Chief Cathy Madalone said.
Her department's Project Medicine Drop box is located at police headquarters at 198 N. Washington Ave. Like the others, it's available 24/7/365.
Before this, most people flushed their unused prescription drugs down the toilet, threw them in the trash, or kept them in the household medicine cabinet. This contaminated the water supply, helped start and feed habits — often for children — and tempted thieves.
The majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet, authorities warn.
With "Project Medicine Drop," the medication can either be disposed of in its original container or be removed and placed in the disposal box.
Liquids should be disposed of in the original container -- with the cap tightly sealed to prevent leakage.
Covanta Energy, a nationwide operator of energy-from-waste and renewable energy facilities, destroys the dropped-off medications at no cost to taxpayers or to the participating departments.
