Another family member had left the Lee Street residence a short time before the 6 p.m. break-in, leading police to believe the intruder was surprised to find anyone home, Foligno said.
The resident also told police the would-be burglar was talking on the phone, suggesting a possible getaway driver, the chief said.
She described the intruder as Hispanic, in his late 20s to early 30s. clean shaven with dark skin. She said he was wearing a Navy blue sweater, blue jeans and a blue skull cap.
A K9 unit tracked the scent to Miller Avenue and Elm Street before losing it, he added.
No one was injured and nothing reported stolen, Foligno said.
His detectives and forensic specialists from the Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification were investigating.
