BEYOND BERGEN: An Episcopal priest who worked with the government on 9/11 and Hurricane Irene relief efforts had an open bottle of vodka on in her center console when she was stopped after her car repeatedly swerved across lanes, hitting the curb inside the Holland Tunnel during last night’s rush hour, Port Authority police said.

Officers responding to a 911 call from a tunnel commuter during rush-hour traffic last night said they also found 53-year-old Diane Reiners of Brooklyn carrying 223 Tramadol and 31 Lorazepam pills after she failed a field sobriety test, the Port Authority’s Joseph Pentangelo said.

Besides hitting the curb and swerving, witnesses told police, Reiners also stopped and then started the orange 2004 Toyota inside the tunnel.

Port Authority Police Officer Christopher Paskovitch positioned himself at Provost Street and 14 Street and saw the car exit the north tube, stop in the roadway for no apparent reason and then continue, Pentangelo said.

He pulled behind it, activated his emergency lights and stopped the car on 14th street just west of Marin Boulevard.

“The officer noticed the suspect’s eyes were bloodshot and watery and in speaking to her there was an odor of alcohol on her breath,” Pentangelo said. “She was slurring her words.”

Besides the bottle of Absolut, Paskovitch found a water bottle containing vodka, along with a prescription bottle with another person’s name containing the pills.

Reiners was charged with DWI, reckless driving and drug possession, and received summonses for having an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, among other offenses.

Her car was also impounded.

By her own count, Reiners has worked with FEMA and other organizations on more than two dozen nationally declared disasters.

Reiners, an assistant priest at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine who has been a volunteer agency liaison, said she’s supervised more than 14,000 volunteers at Ground Zero while working with disaster chaplains and the temporary morgue.

Her resume says she has a master’s degree in divinity ministry, certification in critical incident stress management (pastoral care) and has been a chaplain at SUNY Maritime College.
