YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A reported abduction attempt outside outside Garfield’s Christopher Columbus No. 8 school yesterday proved false, police announced this afternoon.
“It didn’t happen,” Detective Capt. Darren Sucorowski told CLIFFVIEW PILOT . “Nobody came down the hill and tried to grab anybody.”
The girl initially said that a man tried to grab her near the school playground by Belmont Hill Park but she broke free, a law enforcement source told CLIFFVIEW PILOT .
A Bergen County Police Department K-9 unit was dispatched to the area of the Cedar Street school to assist after the school principal called Garfield police just before 1:20 p.m., the source said.
Meanwhile, the school remained locked in place.
The immediate description was of a thin Hispanic man, about 6 feet tall, with a backpack and wearing khaki pants and a long-sleeved, light blue shirt, he said.
“There was no attempted luring or attempted abduction,” the department said in an official release this afternoon.
Detectives from Garfield and the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office intensely investigated before closing the case, Sucorowski said.
Authorities aren’t going into detail out of sensitivity, the captain said.
He noted, however, that police “treat these incidents very seriously and remind parents to be vigilant when dropping off and picking up their children.”
