SADDLE BROOK, N.J. – High winds knocked a giant tree through a Saddle Brook house Monday, toppling power lines.

“The residents were home at the time and lucky for them weren’t occupying the front corner of the home,” Police Chief Robert Kugler said.

An expert responded after the 1 p.m. mishap at Saddle River Road and Rochelle Parkway and determined that the other half of the "twin" tree wasn't in danger of falling, Mayor Robert White told Daily Voice.

The township building inspector determined that it was structurally okay for the residents to immediately return.

"They will be allowed to go back in the house and stay on the first floor," White explained.
