Responding to a New Jersey State Police alert, Officers Marc Buchak and Joe Scrafani pulled the unconscious 43-year-old driver from his banged-up 2011 Hyundai Sonata around 9:40 a.m. Sunday, Police Chief Robert Kugler said.

"They administered a dose of Narcan and he began to come around," the chief said, adding that the driver was known to police.

The Saddle Brook Ambulance Corps then took him to Hackensack University Medical Cetner, he said.

The case was turned over to State Police for prosecution, the chief said.

"The ugly heroin crisis is in need of our attention," Kugler told Daily Voice. "We need to collaborate in our effort to educate, prevent, refer and rehabilitate users -- and, of course, arrest and prosecute where and when it's appropriate."
