Anthony Cervino, 46, swiped a set of Cobra womens' golf clubs and a bag worth a combined $800 and fled the PGA Superstore on Route 17 last Monday, Deputy Police Chief Robert Guidetti told Daily Voice.

An employee who tried to stop him ended up with a bruised arm after getting it caught in the closing door of the getaway car, Guidetti said.

The blue Toyota 4Runner headed south on the Garden State Parkway and was gone, he said.

Detective Michael Cebulski reviewed surveillance video and recognised the vehicle from two other theft investigations he was working, Guidetti said.

Cebulski also knew Cervino from a prior shoplifting investigation that led to his arrest in 2014, the deputy chief said.

Cervino was arrested without incident in Newark on robbery and shoplifting charges and taken to the Bergen County Jail pending a detention hearing -- but not before giving the detective a videotaped statement in which he admitted committing four shoplifting thefts in Paramus since this past October, Guidetti said.

Cervino -- also wanted on warrants out of Wayne, Parsippany and East Orange -- remained held in the county lockup on $50,000 combined bail pending a hearing.
