Wade Hyman was charged with violating a state law that “prohibits an employee of a county correctional facility from knowingly selling, transferring, assigning, providing or otherwise giving an electronic communication device to a person who is confined in a county correctional facility,” Sheriff Richard H. Berdnik and county Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes said in a joint release.

Hyman, 49, who authorities said now lives in Newport News, Va., “was employed as a corrections officer by the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office at the Passaic County Jail” on Jan. 20 when he “provided access to his personal cellular telephone to an inmate to communicate with an individual outside the [jail],” the release says.

He was released on a summons after being arrested Friday morning in Totowa, Berdnik and Valdes said.

Meanwhile, an ongoing joint investigation by their offices was continuing, they said.
