Detectives arrested Claudia and Emilia Souza of Newark at the Holiday Inn on Pehle Avenue after finding them advertising “massage and other services” on Backpage.com and making an undercover appointment, Police Chief Robert Kugler said.

“The ad gave a telephone number and, if called, the girls would tell the caller to meet them at a particular hotel,” Kugler said. “When customers arrived in the hotel parking lot, the girls would tell them what room they are in.”

An undercover officer showed up Wednesday night and was solicited, the chief said. Then reinforcements moved in.

Officers seized $500 in alleged proceeds and the cellphones, Kugler said.

“The hotel management will be getting our stern warning to better enhance their operation and observations, especially with any increased volume of [men] coming and going through their doors without checking in,” he said.

Emilia Souza, 38 (above, left), and Claudia Souza, 27 (right) were released pending Municipal Court appearances this coming Tuesday.
