The council plans to adopt the ordinance at its Aug. 4 meeting, Mayor Robert White told Daily Voice.

"It is a preventative measure because we don't have any stores that sell dogs or cats," White said.

Saddle Brook's ordinance was introduced on July 14 and passed unanimously on first reading.

Emerson became the first Bergen town to ban the sale of puppy mill dogs after 67 dogs were found crated in a van overnight behind Just Pups on Route 17.

ParamusGlen Rock and East Rutherford were quick to follow suit.

Authorities in Emerson and Paramus closed Just Pups owner Vincent LoSacco's shops following a host of violations, and New Jersey officials charged him with abusing customers earlier this week.
