The "ominous-sounding" term is often used in the winter to describe powerful low-pressure systems that intensify rapidly, weather.com reports.

More simply put, it's a storm that intensifies rapidly as its center moves out over the ocean.

To be classified as a "bomb-out," the central pressure of a low-pressure system must drop at least 24 millibars within 24 hours, according to weather.com.

The central pressure Monday was 1003 millibars but as of 5 a.m. Tuesday had dropped to 992 — and it's only continuing to drop.
