English Avenue Park received new lights and a touchup to its surface so the public can use it for soccer games even at night, Councilman Joe Dombrowski said.

It also has some extra parking spaces now.

"We made it a better park," Dombrowski told Daily Voice.

The park already had a softball field and jungle gym.

The plan to improve the soccer situation started several years ago and was helped by an open space grant from the county, Dombrowski said.

The lights will extend the hours the field is playable until around 10 p.m.

The councilman said it's an exciting addition for residents.

"It gives us something that we've needed desperately," he said. "Soccer's the fastest growing sport not only in Elmwood Park, but our nation."
