4 Bail From Stalled Car Moments Before Elmwood Park Train Crash

ELMWOOD PARK, N.J. -- A driver from Garfield desperately tried to restart his stalled car when the bells sounded and the warning gates began to come down around him and his three passengers -- including a 4-year-old child -- at an Elmwood Park grade crossing Friday morning.

All three occupants got out OK, witnesses said.

They bailed out just in time, Police Chief Michael Foligno said.

The 2004 Volkwagen Jetta "appeared to be a total loss" after it was struck by a New Jersey Transit commuter train at the Midland Avenue crossing at Erie Avenue at 8:24 a.m., the chief said.

No one was injured, he said.

Elmwood Park, Saddle Brook and NJ Transit police responded.
